You have to start somewhere and luckily WordPress and we can help!
We’ll start with a general rule – You cannot mess this up – really. For your first post we suggest you test everything you can, try things, delete them, edit them, save draft, preview, rinse and repeat. Ok?
In this first of the series this is going to be more of a 1,000 foot view. In later posts we’ll go deep and cover posting features in depth and show you some secret tricks.
STEP 1: Start a New Post
Sign into your WordPress Dashboard. Once there you’ll have two options, both will get you what you want adding a New Post.
Step 2: Write a Title
We’ll get deep into the science of titles later but for now write a simple title for your blog post. Besides, we’re playing here, right?
Step 3: Enter Content
If you start typing in the content section it’ll automatically defer to “p” or “paragraph” mode. This is for text. Add blocks of text, play with bold, italic and other settings. Add links, add images, add anything you like.
Step 4: Explore ALL the Blocks
Click on that + sign and the balloon will pop up. You’ll see a link at the bottom to “Browse All”. Click that and the left sidebar should open up and you can scroll down and see all the available blocks your site can use! Play with the ones you like, see what they do.
Step 5: Preview
Up at the top you’ll see a small “Save draft”. WordPress will automatically save drafts as you work but just in case, click that button and save. Once it’s saved you can click the link next to it, “Preview”. When clicked it’ll ask you if you want to preview it as a desktop, tablet or phone. Pick one and see how your post looks. Close the window when you are ready, make changes and when you are finally ready…
Step 6: Publish!
All set? Publish! WordPress has a double check that the right sidebar will show you asking you if you really want to publish. Go ahead!
Published? Let’s pop a bottle of chanpagne and celebrate! Don’t drink the whole bottle though you’ll need some of your mental faculties when you realize you misspelled champagne! Yes, we did that on purpose. Here’s the thing… Nothing is permanent, we can go back in and edit that word, we can go in and change images, we can even delete the entire post.
So, nothing to worry about, right. Go create your first post and next we’ll get a little more involved and do some really cool things!
